Doctoral Funding Is Mission Critical
DOCTORAL STUDENTS ARE CRITICAL to the School’s creation of knowledge. They help drive the teaching and research productivity of the entire faculty (see Impact Stories, right). If the School cannot continue to attract sufficient numbers of high quality doctoral students, our core mission is at risk.
We seek the highest caliber candidates. Without full funding, they can and will go elsewhere. The Bloomberg School has set an ambitious goal to remove all financial obstacles for every incoming doctoral student by covering tuition, stipend and health insurance for four years. This ensures that they are free to teach our exceptional students and perform the innovative research that drives public health progress. The benefits of this support will be spread across every field and department in the School.
How you can help
Your contribution will help us support every doctoral student’s work.
Stable endowment funding for scholarships will enable our budding researchers to tackle highly complex fields and test unconventional ideas, while advancing public health knowledge and practice.
Consider basic science, where personnel, not equipment, is the biggest expense for laboratory research. The Dr. Lloyd and Mae Rozeboom Doctoral Scholarship was the deciding factor in recruiting these exceptional students, who are already fulfilling their promise.
The honor of being named the recipient of the Dr. Lloyd and Mae Rozeboom Scholarship has greatly enhanced my drive and determination to continue working towards my aspirations to become an infectious-disease-focused entomologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Although it’s still very early in my time at Johns Hopkins, I am looking forward to experiencing everything that this department has to offer as I continue to grow and develop as a researcher.
—Dorian Jackson, 2018 and 2019 recipient
I had the opportunity to spend last summer working at one of our field sites in Southern Province, Zambia. It was such an amazing chance to meet and work with our Zambian colleagues. Such an invaluable opportunity is only possible with the incredible support that donors like you are able to provide. I cannot thank you enough for this honor and for the support in pursuing my research and career goals.
—Julia Pringle, 2017 Recipient
Providing a fully funded education is vital to obtaining the best and the brightest doctoral students. Our doctoral students often do the most innovative work since they are willing to take risks. They add to the diversity of thought within our scientific community and continue to challenge the status quo of our understanding. The students are absolutely essential for our mission of improving health through discovery.
—Arturo Casadevall, MD, PhD, Alfred & Jill Sommer Professor and Chair, Molecular Microbiology & Immunology
I have always contributed to the Dr. Lloyd and Mae Rozeboom Scholarship, and I always will. It provides me with the marvelous opportunity to cherish the memory of my longtime mentor at Johns Hopkins. I fully realize how important it is for students to receive the funds needed to pursue the dreams, aspirations, and career of their choice in public health, just like I did.
